Analysing Sarah’s digi-pack

 

Here I am analysing Sarah’s digi-pack as she is one member of my group. I looked at all aspects of her designs, looking at what is good, how her digi-pack conforms to conventions and where there could be improvements made.

 

The first side- front cover

I found that Sarah has used a good use of colour on the front of her digi-pack. The main colour, which got used on the background, is the colour black. I think that this is a good use of colour as it helps to connote the darkness and the time of which is considered to be a stereotypical time to go out clubbing. I also think that black is also connotes the unknown which could create a sense of unknown. I think that this could then relate back to the audience as when they see this then they could think, ‘what other type of music is on this album’ I think that this could also create a sense of mystery and shows that there could be a whole range of all different music on the album. I also think that the use of the colour black also connotes something about the artist as well as the artist isn’t ever in the music video, thus could create further mystery about the artist and what the artist may be nice. I also think that the colour black is a conventional colour, which is often used in dance as it helps to connote the dance genre and when people go out partying.

    The other main colour, which is used, is the use of the colour purple; I can see that this has been created through the layering of the red and the blue on top of each other. This is used to create a strobe effect across the whole of the album. I think that the use of this purple colour against the black makes the strobe light stand out a lot more. I think that the use of this strobe light also helps to further enhance that club setting and create that dance atmosphere on the front of the digi-pack. Thus helping the colours and the design conform to the conventions of a dance album. There is a limited use to the colour on the front cover, I think that this is good otherwise this colour could have over powered the digi-pack and could have made it look a little bit to feminine.

    The other colour, which has also been used, is the colour navy blue I think that this helps to conform to the conventions of dance as well as working well with the other colours which are on the page. I think that the use of the deep navy helps to conform to the time of which people might go out and the time of which people might go out to parties, which is usually the evening. I also think that the use of the could also connote the sea which I think that could be related to party islands, conveying that these are the sort of places which this party could be played.

   

    There is a good used of graphics on the front cover. I think that this helps to attract people to look at the digi-pack, to find out what is on it. One of the graphics, which is used, is the ‘Save The World’ logo I think that this is good because this is the name of the album. This is also as this is as this is the sticker, which I also used in the music video, which has, been made as well. Therefore I think that this could also attract people to the album as well, as they could recognise the logo on the front cover.

    There is also a woman, which I have also been used on the front cover as well. I think that this is good as it looks like she is dancing through the use of the staggering of the woman across the front cover. I think that this helps the digi-pack conform to the dance conventions as well. As it is very stereotypical to have women on the front cover of digi-packs as they conform parties and dance. I think that this could be something else, which could also draw people to look at the digi-pack, if they see a woman on the front cover, and then they may assume that this is for the dance genre.

    I think that the use of the red and yellow dots all over the background I think that the use of these connote club colours and as well as this I think that this connotes energy, and the life which is at the party. I think that the red connotes heat, as it’s the colour red and that this could connote all of the people, which are at this party. I think that the use of the colour yellow connotes that people are happy and the sun. So I think that could that this music could also be played during the day as well.  

    There is then the last graphic, which has been used as well. This is the effect of the strobe lights, so that just in case the use of the black background and the woman on the front didn’t conform dance there was the strobe lights, which is also stereotypical of the dance conventions. The directions, which the lights are going in I, think helps to illustrate that the beams are hitting against the sides of the wall, which is the front cover.

    There is also good use of font on the front cover of this digi-pack. The font on this digi-pack conforms to the dance genre. As it is very straight, and sleek. I think that this conform so the dance genre well, as this helps to connote the way which people dress when they go out clubbing, as to get into a lot of clubs it is important to look well dressed and have to look good to get in and I think that is what this font connotes well.

Improvements- one thing which I thing could be changed for improved could be to make the woman on the front of the digi-pack bigger so that that she fills more of the side. One reason I think this is because I believe that this could attract more people to look at the digi-pack and could even widen the target audience for the amount of people who would look at the digi-pack. I also think that this could fill some of the space on the front of the digi-pack as well. But I would still keep the woman in the same place as where she is positioned is really effective.  I think that the woman on the front conforms to the genre of dance and therefore looks really good on the front; I just think to emphases it a little bit more that it could benefit the aesthetics on the front for the woman to be a little bit bigger.    

    One of the other changes which I think that I could make would be to the gap where there are no spot lights. I don’t think that it needs a lot of spot lights but I think that just putting on a few just to fill in the gaps a little bit could look good and I think that this could just enhance the dance genre just a little bit more. Again I think that this could just make the digi-pack stand out a little bit more.

    But other than this there aren’t any other changes which I think that I could make to the front as I think that it is very well designed and looks very good I don’t see the need to change much else.

 

The second side- welcome message

The main colour, which has been used here, is the colour black. I think that this is a good colour to use as it helps to keep the sides of the digi-pack consistent. I think that this is also good as it helps to create a narrative, which could potentially run throughout the whole of the music video. I think that the black helps to create mystery, as the audience may not be aware of all of the material, which is on the album. I think that the use of this colour could also connote the night as well; I think that this is good as it is the main time, which people go out clubbing. I think that the use f the black background helps to create simplicity and convey the dance conventions. I think that the use of the black could also connote that this album appeals to a whole load of different people, which may listen to dance music. For example people who listen to all genres tend to like to go clubbing as well conveying that the music for this album appeals to a whole range of different people. 

    The other colour, which is used on this side of the digi-pack, is the colour purple it is a similar colour to what has been used on the front cover. With the use of the red and the blue. I think that this looks good as it helps to connote the strobe lights, which are in clubs. I think that this is good as it is not to over powering and it is just in the corner of the background. This is also the main graphic, which has been used on the back as well.  

    The front, which has been used for the welcome message, is the same font, which has been used for the font cover of the album. I think that this is good as it conforms to the conventions of dance, and is very simple and easy to read I think that this could then connote the way which people dress when they go out as thy have to look stylist and dress with decent swag. I think that the simplicity of the text also connotes the simplicity as to why people might go to parties, which could be just to go out and have a goo time.

Improvements- one of the first things which I would change to this second side of the digi-pack is probably to increase the size of the main spot light which is behind the woman on the digi-pack. The reason for this is because I think that this could put the background at risk of looking a little bit bare. I think that the look of the black on the back does look good but I think that the use of layer could probably enhance the look of this side and I think that by just adding a little extra colour to the back that the dance genre can be caught a little bit more, and just help to create a little more of a club setting. I think that this could just go either bigger than the purple colour or go behind it, or it could go on the inside the purple spot light.

    Another change which I also think could be made is to the light hard spot lights which are in the corner. I think that they could be a little more added. I think what might look quite nice could be to have a gradation of these light spot lights so that they just sort of fade out a little bit and as they fade out they get a little bit transparent, and there could be few of them. I also think that there could be a range of sizes instead of having all one side.

    Other than this I wouldn’t make any other changes for this side of the digi-pack.  

The third side- the CD disc

There has been a whole use of colours used here. One of the main colours which are used is the colour white this is the colour which has been used for the background of the CD disc. I think that this looks good as one of the conventions of dance is to use bright colours and the use of the colour white in comparison to the colour of the colour black makes the white look really bright. I think that this is good as it also helps to make the CD stand out a lot more to the user of the digi-pack. I think that the use of the colour white is good as it has a range of all different connotations some of which being the white helps to portray the idea of a blank canvas. I think that this is then something which can then be related back to the people who go out making it the night that they want it to be. I think that this is also good as it is also a way of conveying that this album could convey to a whole range of different people. As it’s not just people who listen to dance music, as a whole range of different people go clubbing, so I think that the use of the colour white helps to convey that this is an album which can appeal to a whole range a different people.

    I had also used another colour on the background is also the colour purple and blue which are used to help make up the zig zag lines which go along the back of the CD cover. I think that this is also a good colour to use as it helps the back of the cover conform to the conventions of dance. I think that the use of these lights also help to show the dance genre. As strobe lights are something which is in clubs. I think that is also good as the colours which have also been used are the lights which are often are at clubs. I also think that the use of the strobe are good as they play a big part in the in the music video which our group has made. I think that this is could really help to connote with the audience as well.

     For the actual CD there is a much darker colour used I think that this looks good as it juxtaposes with the colour white which has been used on the background of the CD cover. I think that this looks good as it helps the CD the strand out, there is a use of a dark colour around the rim of the CD and then there is the blend into a purpler colour as well. I think that this works well as these are all colours which conform to the genre of dance as well.

 

    There is a whole range of graphics which have been used here. The first of which being, the women on the front of the actual CD. This is the same woman which has been used on the front of the CD cover as well. I like the design of this as it looks like the figure has been streamed across the whole of the CD. I think that this give a good effect that the woman is moving, and give the effect that she is dancing. I think that this is further enhanced where the image is slightly blurry, thus portraying the motion of the woman moving. This could show that the woman is having a really good time, and that is why she is dancing, thus conveying that the music on the disc is really good. I think that the use of the woman all over the disc also looks good as it give the effect that she is dancing, then the fact that it is diagonal also helps to convey that the movement is quite free and not really in an orderly form. I think that this could then show that people can get lost in this music because it is so good.

    The other main graphic which has also been used is the use of the lines which are behind the disc. I think that these look good as well as being graphical as well as they help to convey the conventions of dance as they are brightly coloured. As well as this they also look good as they look like strobe lights which are often seen in clubs. I think that this is good as it then conveys to the audience that this is music which could be played in night clubs and through the use of the white background, I think could also help to connote the party islands as well. Thus conveying that this is also music which could be played at night clubs at party islands.

    I really like the choice of graphics which have been used here as I think that they look both simple and effective as well as conveying to the dance genre, and making this clear to the audience as well. I also think that the use of the colours also helps to make the disc stand out as well.

Improvements- one of the changes which I would make here is to the woman on the front I think I would make her a lot more transparent and maybe set a different transparency level for each woman so that it is a little bit varied. I think that this could make it look like the woman is moving and like she is dancing I think that this could look really good on the CD as it could show people that this is a typical dance CD and one which people can dance to. I would also make the woman range in different sizes so that each woman is a different size I think that this could also look good as this is a really simple but effective way of showing a progression of time. Thus conforming to the conventions of dance.

     One of the other changes which could be made is to the colour of the disc. As I think that it could be an idea to keep with the colour scheme which has ran throughout the whole of the digi-pack. Most of the colours which are used are black and purple so I think that these are two colours which work well together and could be worked well on this disc. For example there could be an all black disc and then have a spot light of purple in the middle white the gap is in the middle of the disc is (the whole) so it looks like a spot light of purple this could then connote the energy coming from the middle of the disc, thus showing how powerful the CD is and how good it is and how much energy there is. This could also connote the centre of the dance floor as that is where most people usually are and this is shown through the use of the purple light.

    This is the only changes which I think I could make.  

 

The fourth side- The Graphics

There has been as good varied ranges of colours used here of which I think really conform to the genre of dance. I think that it looks really effective, and helps to tell a little narrative about the music on the album as well as the people which this album is aimed at. The first colour which has been used is the colour black; this is the colour which fills the whole of the background of its colour. I think that this was a really good colour to use as it think that this helps to connote a typical scene at a night club as it tends to be quite dark inside and then a varied range of all different lights are used to fill the night club, most of which tend to be strobe lights. Therefore I think that this use of this background works well, as it tell the audience straight away that this album is targeted towards dance, thus conforming to the genre of dance, through the use of the colour black. I think that this colour has a varied range of different conventions some of which being; to create mystery, I think that this is good as people never tend to know what the night is going to hold for them until they are actually there, and sometime people tend not to remember the night either, I think that this could then show that this music could create a different nights for everyone conveying that there is something for everyone on the album. Another connotation is the time of which people tend to go out clubbing as well, as it is usually the evening therefore I think that the use of the black background conveys that the setting of the night club. I think that this is a nice way to set the scene of a digi-pack as well. I think the black colour conveys the setting of a night club and the time of which people go out and go and party. I think that this could then really help to connect to the audience as it could help them to times where they have gone out and have had a good time.

    Another colour which has been used it also the colour purple, this is a colour which has been used on the digi-pack. I think that this is a good colour which has been used as it conveys the life at the party, and colourfulness from the lights and colours which people wear when they go out. I think that this again can really connect with people who go out partying. I think that in a way that the use of the lights which is with the purple also works well as it almost looks like the lights as well as looking like a sun set which you get on party islands and the colour of the reflection of the sea mixed in with the lights and the colours of the sky I think that this could also help to connect with people as well as they could also be able to connect with this image.

    There is also a bit use of the colour navy blue I think that this is also a really good colour to use as well as it helps to portray the midnight which people go out in as well as the mixture of the night sky and the reflection with the water which is then mixed in with the use of the colour purple creates and an amazing use of colour which really help convey to the conventions of dance. I think that this makes the graphics on this side of the digi-pack look really nice, as a result I think that this could then connect with the audience really well, and appeal to their nature.  

 

    There has been a wide use of graphics on this page. The first graphics which I think just works really well is the use of the lighting, as it looks really nice and looks like low key lighting even though the lighting is bright. But it almost creates shadows and gives off a good lighting effect which helps conform to the conventions of dance. I also think that this gives off the effect of spot lights as well this also conforms to the conventions of dance. I do think that this image used for the background is very generic, but I think that this is good as it can then connect with more than one person, as there hasn’t be use of a specific time or anything like that, so it is almost like a blank canvas which can then connect with a lot more people. I think that overall that this really helps to create that party scene and looks really good.

    Another graphics which has been used is also the two strobe lights which represent the spot lights which are often had a lot in clubs. I think that this looks really good as it conveys the lights which go through a club I also think that this then conforms to the conventions of dance a lot more. I think that the way that they have been used is also very good as well through the wide spread of graphics which have been used it gives off the effect that woman is in the spot light, I think that this looks really good as it, could also suggest that the woman is dancing to the beat of the music, which is then in time with the strobe lights. I think that this also looks like the dancing is a reflection of the music and that this is how the music on the album makes the woman feels. I think that colour which has been used is also good as it is not a stereotype of either men or females, so is thus a colour which could then be related to both genders. Thus conveying that the album can convey to both genders as they can both enjoy it.

    The last graphics which has been used here is the use of the woman in all different forms on this digi-pack. I think that this is a good portrayal of all the different emotions which the woman could go though while she is listening to the music on the album. I think that this is really effective as it could convey that this album appeal to more than one type of person and that there is more than to the album and something for all areas of dance which people can enjoy and I think that this is illustrated through each blue figure and through the largest image of the woman. I also think that the use of the electric woman is good as it helps to conform to the dance genre of music, oh brightness and a large use of colour. I also think that the use of the staggering could convey the movement of the woman how this is dancing so fast and that she has just been caught in the middle of dancing.   

Improvements-

I do really like this side of the digi-pack but if I were to make any changed I think that it would probably just be to add a little bit more colour to the side. I think that this could be to existing spotlight which is already there I think that a new layer of colour could benefit this side of the digi-pack quite well. I think that even if it is just a colour which is similar to the purple colour to either go on the outside of the purple spot light so that the purple colour is the main colour. Or the opposite, where there could be a colour put on top of the purple colour and make the other colour the main colour. This could also look really good. I just think that this could conform to the genre of dance a little bit more.

    The other aspect which I think that I could change is the text I think that some of it could be bigger not all of it just some of it. For example the last line or just a few key words that the artist may want to stand out a little bit more. I think that the size of the font is fine but I just think that some of the words could be a little bit bigger this could just make the side look a little bit more interesting.

    These are the only changes which I would make to this side of the digi-pack.

 

The firth side- The Graphics

 One of the main colours which have been used on the background of this side of the digi-pack is the use of the colour black. I think that this is a good colour to use as it fills the background in a lot. I think that it follows the background which has been used throughout the whole of the digi-pack I think that this helps to give a really professional finish to the cover as well. I think that this gives the digi-pack a really consistent. This is also evident through the use of the same woman which has been used throughout the digi-pack. I think just as the black colour does throughout the whole of the digi-pack that it helps to give the effect of a night club, I think that this helps to give the digi-pack a little narrative of its own as well I think that this can be really effective once it is opened as it could tell its own little story. I think the black helps to convey the setting of a club or the outside of a club or the outside of a party island, and I think that by keeping it black that this can help to relate to a lot of people that look at the digi-pack. Thus I think that this set a good scene for the action on the front of the digi-pack.

    Another colour which has been used is the colour purple I think that there has been a good use of this colour here as this is a colour which has been used throughout the rest of the digi-pack as well, therefore I think that it helps to carry a narrative throughout the digi-pack and helps to develop the relationship between the woman and the use of the purple lights which are going on around her. I think that this is a good colour to use is it is a very common colour which is used for strobe lighting in clubs. I think that the use of this colour could then connect to the whole idea of strobe lighting.

    There are also other colours which have been used as well, some of which being, yellow, blue and green. I think that these colours are effective as well as they help to represent dance conventions as well as looking like strobe lighting thus relating back to clubs and clubbing music and the conventions of dance as this is the type of music which gets played in clubs. I think that this helps to create an environment for the digi-pack, and create more of a narrative for the digi-pack.

 

The main graphic which has been used on the front of this side of the digi-pack is the use if the women standing in front of the digi-pack, I think that this looks good as it looks like the woman is dancing, and like she is moving so fast thus conveying how she is so lost in the music. I think that this is good as she then conveys what a good time that this woman is having and could make people who are buying the album think that they could also have a that good time as well. I think that the use of all the different effects which have been used on the woman also help to convey that she is going through a whole range of different emotions however they all make her want to dance. I think that this could then convey that there is music on this album for everyone. I think that the first effect which has been used has a very big effect on the audience as it could show that the woman is almost dissolving into that is how much she loves the music and how involved she is getting with it. 

    The other graphic which has also been used is the spot lights which are in the light hand side of the design. I think that these look good as it create a really nice environment, and conveys the club setting. This could remind people of outings which they have had which makes them happy and reminds them of the good experiences which they have had. I think that this looks good and complements the woman and the big strobe lights really well. I think that this could also convey the feelings and the emotions which the woman is having a really good time and all the different songs help to make her feel different things.

Improvements- the first change which I would make to this side is to the woman in the bottom left hand corner I think that she could have a little more of a figure to try and make it more obvious that it’s a woman. I like the effect which is on the woman I think that I would probably keep that woman with the same effect but I would just have one layer of the woman and then repeat the effect on that one woman to make the effect a little bit bolder. As I think that this could make the woman stand out a lot more and just look a little bit better.

    Another change which I think that I would make is to make the strobe lights which have been used a little bit bolder and stand out a little bit more so that the lines are bolder and strong so that they stand out more and are more defined and just a little bit bolder to create a stronger line.

    These are the only changes that I would make to this side.   

 

The sixth side- The Back Cover

There is a large use of colour used on the back side of the cover I think that this is good as this is the second side which people see when they pick up the digi-pack. Therefore I think that it is important that it looks eye catching for and appeal to the eye. One of the colours which have been used is the colour black I think that this looks good as it has been used throughout the whole of the digi-pack I think that this looks good as it keeps the consistency going through the whole of the digi-pack and helps to create a type of environment for the digi-pack, and sets that scene of the digi-pack. I also think that it is good how the same colour has been used throughout the whole of the digi-pack. I think that the use of the colour creates mystery and the unknown I think that this can relate to the fact that no one knows what the night is going to hold as well as creating an environment for the digi-pack of an outdoor setting.   

    Another colour which has been used is the colour blue I think that this is a good colour to use as it creates the environment of midnight and late night outings. I think that this can also convey the use of strobe lights and the use of this shade of blue is a lot brighter compared to the colour black I think that this could then conform to the conventions of dance as well as through the use of bright colours. This is also a common colour which can sometimes be in clubs when used for strobe lights, thus why I think that it is good to use on the back as I think that this gives the impression of a spot light I like that this looks really effective and really helps gives off that club vibe. I think that this then conforms to the conventions of dance quite a lot as it someone were to pick this up and they saw the bright colours they may know straight away what it’s for.

    Another colour which is used on the back is the colour green, I think that this is again a colour which is similar to clue in terms of it is a colour which is often found a lot in clubs, for strobe lighting and sometimes for the colour of the drinks as well. Therefore I think that this colour works really well with all of the other colours which have been used as well. I think that this a colour which a lot of people can relate to as well if they have ever been to a party where there has been a lot of lighting I think that this looks really good. I think that the use of the colour green also conforms to the codes and conventions of a dance and house genre music video. This is because they tend to use bright colours a lot and the mixture of colours which have been used on the back conveys this. I think that this colour can also be stereotyped a little bit as a male colour; I think that this works well as this could then suggest that this album appeals to men as well as women.

    Another colour which has been used is the colour yellow. I think that this colour works well as this colour also conforms to the codes and conventions of a dance genre music video. This is because this is a bright colour which has been used, and one of the conventions is the use of bright colours. I think that this is also good as through the use of the bright colours it could attract people to look at the album and maybe want to find out what is on the album. I think that they then maybe able to tell that it are a dance album when they see the colours which have been used as this portrays the dance genre. I think that the yellow could also have a range of other connotations as well some of which being the sun. As the sun is bright and stereotyped as being the colour yellow; I also think that the way that it has been used it almost looks a bit like a sun set, as the yellow is at the bottom of the page as well I think that looks like the sun is going in and the party is just about the start so I really like the look of that. I think this could also connote that some people also party until the early hours of the morning as well.

    Another colour which has been used is the colour purple I think that this colour also works well on the back with the rest of the colours as this is a colour which has been used throughout of the digi-pack. So I think this colour is good as it keep the consistency up as well with the use of the colour black and the purple. I think that this helps to continue the narrative throughout the digi-pack. I think that this colour adds a bit of warmth to the digi-pack and really helps to bring all of the other colours together. Again I think that this colour could also connote a strobe light as well through the way the colour is used and positioned. I think that this could conform to the codes and the conventions of the dance and house genre of music.   

 

This is the digi-pack of one of the members of my group. I have looked at all of the good aspects of the digi-pack as well as places where improvements could be made. I have also looked at where how this digi-pack has conforms to the conventions of the dance genre and how this could attract the audience.  

Improvements- I would make the spot lights in each corner a lot bigger I think that this could benefit the digi-pack it could blend the colours together a little bit more I think that this could look really good as the mixture of colours could create different colours between them and this could also look really nice as well. As this could conforms to the conventions of dance a lot. Or I think that something else which could be done instead is to have the two opposite colours bigger than the other two I think that this could look good as well as I think that this could show the natural flow of the lights, so they don’t all shine at the same time therefore I think that this could look like two of them have just got brighter while the other two are going back down again. But I think that this could look good as it conforms to the codes and the conventions of dance.

    Another change which I think that I could make as well would be to the woman as I think that she could be to the woman as I think that I would have her start from one size and then differ in size for example in the foreground I would make her relatively small and then I would make each woman behind her bigger, and as they got bigger I would also make them a lot more transparent as well. I would also move them up a little bit as well to create a little diagonal line. The reason for this is because I think that this creates a sense of movements as well as this I think that this also makes it look like the woman is dancing. I think that this could be effective as if this is something which has continued throughout the whole of the digi-pack then this could then create a narrative which could then reflect the music video which has been made which is concept and narrative which is what the digi-pack is where there is the use of the colour and the spot lights acting as the concept and then the woman acting as the narrative as it’s her story of her moving and dancing throughout the digi-pack. This could then marry together the digi-pack, the advert and the music video quite well and help to make it look really professional. As well as conforming to the codes and conventions of dance.     

This is the analysis which i made for this member of my group. I have looked at what they have done well and place where i think that improvements could be made. I have also looked at how the digi-pack has conforms to the codes and the conventions of the dance genre.
