Analyses of song lyrics

The song which I have chosen to produce for my music video is ‘Save The World’ by Swedish House Mafia; this is because it fits into the dance genre. Also because it conforms to the idea which I have got for the music video which I wish to produce and fits in well with the concept based video which I wish to produce, this song will also help me conform to the conventions of a dance music video.
Into the streets, we're coming down- for this first line of the song, I think this sets the scene for the song and gives the audience something to visualize and starts the song. I think that this connotes the setting for the rest of the song through the word ‘streets’ I think that the camera elements would be really important here as it would be the start of the video so I would want to make sure that it is an interesting shot to that people feel intrigued to want to watch the music video and find out more. So for this reason I think I would have a close up shot.
We never sleep, Never get tired- for the second line of the song I think that a character is being developed from the first line of the song, as the words ‘we’re’ suggest a whole group of people are in the streets and its now just one person, this could then Swedish House Mafia referring to themselves as there is more than one of them. I think by the song saying things like they ‘never sleep’ and ‘never get tried’ suggest that these people who are being spoken about are like the super heroes who are saving the world. I think that the start of the music video which I have planned to have will mean that the start of the video will be a little slow so I think this scene will still be a close up.
Through urban fields, and suburban life- I think this line is almost like the group explaining the setting which they are travelling through to save the world. So in this case it is ‘urban fields’ and a ‘suburban life’ I think that last quote is talking more about the type of life style which people are living now, so the word ‘suburban ‘ would express this. During this scene I will want to use a long shot of one of the settings which I will be using through this music video.

Turn the crowd up now, We'll never back down- I think this line is talking more about noise which the crowd would be making at a concert or somewhere like that, and that phrase ‘turn the crowd up now’ would suggest the quality of Swedish House Mafias music and the louder they want the crowd they would know to play one of their mainstream songs, because that would get the crowd to cheer and scream more. I then this that this could mean that the group is like making their way to one of their concerts and this is the path which they have to pass and the emotion which they might be feeling before one of their concerts. Then the phrase ‘we’ll never back down’ could mean that the group is not going to stop playing their music, but then I think that this could also connote the idea of never giving up on trying to save the world and that they will keep trying. I think this could also mean that the group is trying to change the world with their music as that’s what they do best so that’s how they would change the world. For this shot I would like to start one of the narratives for example start to show the protagonist and the antagonist in action.
Shoot down a skyline, watch it in primetime- I think that this line is about going to extreme lengths to save the world even if it means shooting down the skyline. Then I think the line ‘watch it on primetime’ could mean quite a few things the first of which being their audience watching them on the TV and that being one way in which they could save the world by people watching on the TV, then I also think that this could mean the saving which they will be doing will be able to be watched on primetime TV because that’s how big the change to the world will be and that’s how much they would have saved the world. For this shot I think I might have the camera cut straight across to the other narrative which will be going on, so this will be the tramp.
Turn up the love now, listen up now, turn up the love-then I think that again there is another reference to music here with the phrase ‘turn up the love now’ the word ‘turn up’ could relate back to music like turning up the volume but this is turning up the love, this could be done through music, by putting on music which people love, this then creates more love and turns up the love. Then I think that the phrase ‘listen up now’ is Swedish House Mafia addressing their audience, and then the last part of this verse which is the same as the start I think that this would then be what the group is trying to say to their fans. The shot i would like to use in my own music video would be a close up of some sort of plan being put into action.
Who's gonna save the world tonight? - This lyric of the song I think this is Swedish House Mafia asking a question to its audience, this is to help them to think and is a way of getting the audience involved with the lyrics and help them to feel that the lyrics are directed towards them and makes them think about who is saving the world. I think that these lyrics are ones which could be targeted towards an audience of a live performance as this can be seen as something which could be said to them when preforming live somewhere. I think for my own video the type of mise-en-scene which I would use for this part of the video would be one of the main narratives which I have chosen to have throughout the song, for example the narrative of the tramp on the floor. The shot i will be using here would be a long shot this would be to show the difference between saving people can save the world.
Who's gonna bring you back to life? – This is another question which is asked by the group again I think this is done to make the audience think about what the group is trying to say. I think that there lyrics could also been seen as Swedish House Mafia saying that their music will bring the audience back to life, because this is how powerful it is and that is what the music is capable of, I think the word ‘who’ actually suggests Swedish House Mafia themselves.
We're gonna make it, you and I – I think that these last two verses them answer the question about who is going to save the world. I think that the first two verses are there to place the questions into the audience head then the two verses which occur after that is Swedish House Mafia answering the questions which they have just asked. I then think that the words ‘you’ and ‘I’ I think that these pronouns are a way of getting the audience involved further as it is then like Swedish House Mafia and make the audience think that Swedish House Mafia actually think that together they can save the world. This is conveyed through the word ‘we’re’ as it is a pronoun which is used to describe a group of people together. For this scene I think that the mise-en-scene which I will be using is having something happen or a person appear to help the characters and the protagonists from the main narratives.
We're gonna Save The World tonight – I then see this as meaning that Swedish House Mafia is saying that together as in the audience as well of themselves are capable of saving the world together. I think that another way of looking at this would be that through one of their performances they will be able to save the world with all of the love and the goodness which they can do together. This is displayed through the use of the pronoun ‘we’re’ as that is a word which can be used to describe a whole collective of people, so in this case that would the audience which they are performing to. The word which suggests that it could be one of their performances would be the word ‘tonight’ as this is a term which is often used during tours through phrases, as a tour with one crowd usually lasts one night as well. I think that for this I would have the other scenario being seen to and the protagonist being helped out.
Ohoh oh oh, oh oh ohoh oh – I think that think line would be seen as the crowd cheering. This is because is usually ends up sounding like a wave of noise. I think within my music video I would have a transition between this and maybe the other narrative perhaps a fade.
We're far from home, it's for the better – I think that this could be representative of Swedish House Mafia being on a tour which is not in Sweden, and that would therefore be seen as being far from home, and then I think that the phrase ‘it for the better’ could then mean that they don’t mind being this far from home because they are entertaining their fans and making them happy therefore they think this is better than being at home where they may not be able to do this as much. I also think that this line could also mean that the people who are saving the world are far from where they live maybe but that is okay because what they are doing is saving the world and is that means being far from home to do that then they will travel ‘far from home’ I also think that this could mean that distance doesn’t matter, and they will travel as far as they have to in order for them to save the world. Then the phrase ‘it for the better’ could mean that they will travel far in order to save the world.  For the music video which I will be producing I will have the after math of the event.
What we dream, it's all that matters – this could be that Swedish House Mafia put their dreams first before everything, and they are telling their audience that they could do that same to get to where they want to be and in order for them to live their dreams and make it happen.  This is shown through the last line of that phrase which is ‘it’s all that that matters’ I think that this shows that by putting dreams first they can be achieved. I also think that this could me that all these people care about is saving the world, and that, this is all that matters. For the thoughts of my own music video would be to convey someone giving up their time to save someone else and have them risking themselves for the better.
We're on our way, united- I think this is a bold statement, the word ‘we’re’ suggests Swedish House Mafia referring to themselves and the audience together. And then I think that this is further enhanced by the word ‘united’ as this can be a reference to a group of people getting a team, I think that it can also been seen as two different types of people being brought together. I think that this could also be seen as the people who are saving the world that they are talking, and they are saying to people that together they are able to save the world. I think for this verse I would have the other narrative and show the hero of that narrative.
Turn the crowd up now, We'll never back down - the lyrics of this verse is a repeat for the song lyrics which are above.
Shoot down a skyline, watch it in primetime – this is also the same lyric as before, therefore won’t need to add anything else to it.
Turn up the love now, listen up now, turn up the love – this is the same verse from above and therefore won’t be adding anymore.

Who's gonna save the world tonight? –
This verse will have the same meaning as the first these lyrics are displayed.
Who's gonna bring you back to life? – This is a repeat of the verse before.
We're gonna make it, you and I – this is another lyrics which has also been repeated.
We're gonna Save The World tonight – because this is the chorus of the same it is therefore the same.

Ohoh oh oh, oh oh ohoh oh [repeated til end] –
this is another repeated lyric
These are the lyrics of the song which I have chosen to do, the song being ‘Save The World’ by Swedish House Mafia.  By choosing this song it allows me to convey a strong message to my audience. This is to try and create a bold statement about saving the world and by analysing the lyrics this has allowed helped me to make some of the decision about what I want to happen at each stage of the lyrics, and help me to link the visuals with the lyrics.

  1. You have made a good start in analysing the lyrics to your chosen song. You have also considered the hidden meanings behind the song too.

To develop this post you also need to include the group lyric analysis, which will demonstrate group planning on micro elements and your chosen style of a music video
