Analysing Sarah’s advert
This is the advert of one of the members of my group.
Through analysing the adverts of all of the people in my group this will able
me to see what they have done well and what they could improve their advert.
This process is done to see all of the ideas of each member of the group so
that we could then decide on a digi-pack to use or come up with ideas between
the groups of us and create a new one.
There is a large range of colour which has been used here.
The main colour which is used to fill the background is black. I think that
this is a good colour to use as it conforms to the conventions of dance and I
think that it develops a club setting, thus I think that this could attract
people to want to buy and look at the album as it may seem like something which
appeal to them. The colour black has a whole range all of all different
connotations, some of which being; that the colour creates a sense of mystery,
I think that this could then connect with the whole idea of people not knowing
what the night. I think that this could also relate to the idea of when people
go out to a place where they may not have been before, as this could create
mystery for people as they may not be aware of the type of night they have
ahead of them, and the good music which they could be listening to. I think
that black could also connote the setting being the time at which people are
going out, as some people tend to go partying during the evening therefore it
is usually dark therefore the background is also dark. I think that is could
also relate back to the inside of a club as well as it is usually dark, this
usually creates a type of environment, again regaining that mystery which is
had by dark colours and the darkness. Therefore I think that black is a good
colour to use as it helps to create a setting, and connect with people who may
like dance music who may be able to relate with this situation and who may like
clubbing music. I think that black can also relate to the unknown as well, as
most people are not really sure about what they are going to do and what the
party they are going to is going to be like, thus helping to represent the
unknown as they are unsure. But I think that this could also relate to the idea
that when people go into clubs they are unsure what music they are going to
listen to and what is going to happen I think that this is also like the use of
the low key lighting which has been used in the music video which has been
created as the protagonist is unsure what is going to happen to her.
Another colour which
is used is the colour yellow, this is a very bright colour which has been used
I think that it looks really good and effective as well as yellow conforms to
the codes and the conventions of dance. This is because yellow is a bright
colour and therefore this could then conforms to the conventions of dance as
one of the conventions is the use of bright colours. I think that the use of
the yellow up against the black helps to make the yellow look even brighter I
think that this looks good, as this could then catch the attention of people
for example if they were walking past it, or if they were waiting for a train
and they saw the advert then this could encourage them to look at the poster
through the brightness of the yellow initially catching their attention. I also
think that the way that the yellow has been used also looks good as it is so
bright and so big I think that this could then connote the sun, as this is also
bright and stereotyped as yellow. I also think that the way that the colour has
been used that this could also look like a sunset as well. As the yellow is
positioned in the left bottom hand corner of the page thus portraying the idea
of the sun going in. I think that this could then further illustrate the idea
of the time which people go partying which is usually in the evening. Thus the
sun going in conveying this; that the sun has now gone in and the evening and
the partying as begun. But I think that there is a bit of a dual purpose as I
think that it could also show that the sun is coming up. Thus conveying that
people have been partying of such a long time that it is now the next day, thus
could convey just how good the music is that it will have people dancing all
night. I think that the use for the yellow also looks a little bit like strobe
lights of which are seen quite a lot in clubs, I think that this could be
effective in attracting people to look at the advert.
Another colour
which has also been used is the use of the colour purple. I think that the use
of this colour helps to add to the effectiveness of the advert as it makes it
look stand out, as this looks like a very bright colour over the black. I think
that this then conforms to the codes and conventions of a dance genre as that
relates back to the use of a lot of bright colours which is what has been used
here. I think that the use of the purple colour works really well as this is
the same sort of colour which has also been used on the design for the
digi-pack. Thus I think that this really links in nicely as it almost tells a
little narrative of its own, (this with the use of the woman as well). I think
that the way that the purple has been used, it looks a little bit like a strobe
light, like one of the beams I think that this looks really good as it could
then relate back to people who might go out partying a lot or who have watched
the video before. As well as people who may have been out to the party islands
before as there tends to be the use of a lot brighter colours there. The use of
the colour purple helps to connote warmth, and I think that this could then
connote the energy and the heat which is often had a parties, for when people
are dancing and having a good time.
There has also
been a bit of the use of the colour navy blue. This blue is very dark, I think
that it looks really nice with the use of the purple as that is where it has
been layered. This is one of the colours which has been used a lot throughout
the whole of the digi-pack therefore I think that it looks good on the poster
as well as it just helps to tie in the narrative, design and the colour scheme.
I think that keeping the colour scheme the same could also be a better idea
than changing the scheme as this could play a major part of portraying the
narrative, and represent the style of the artist. As this is because colours
play a big part in how an artist is represented and says a lot about their
personality and the person they are. I think that the colour navy does this
well as there are so many connotations which the colour navy has, some of which
being, a male representative, the colour of the sea this could then link back
to clubbing islands and people partying by the sea. Thus could represent
freedom and how the artist is free to be whoever he wants to be and this could
excite the audience as they may not know what to expect on the album. I think
that this could also then show that people are free to be whoever they want to
be as well, this could then mean that the album could appeal to load of
different people and not just people who listen to dance. This could also
promote that the audience should also be free to be whoever they want to be as
well. Then there was also the representation of the setting which also come
through here as well, being the blue of the sea and the blue of the night sky.
There has been a good style of font used here. I think that
this helps to convey the dance genre of music. The font which has been used has
hard sides, it’s thin, and sleek. I think that this represents the dance genre
well. As I think that this could connote the type of swag and style which
people may need to have when they go clubbing. As sometimes in order for people
to get into clubs they have to dress smart, and I think that this is something
which is carried through in this font as it is very smart and serious just like
the way people have to dress. I think that this the boldness also looks good as
well as people tend to look quite bold and standout when they go out for
example when women wear heels. I think that the use of the font does help to
make the advert conform to the conventions of dance I also think that this
could appeal to people who listen to dance music a lot more. Through all of the
other adverts which I have researched and looked into I think that this is a
good font to use. I think that the style of the font is good, and I think that
the use of font is also a good way of representing the artist. As this could
show that the artist is a serious artist, this could convey that the artist is
serious about dance music and as they take it serious this could then convey
that this is something which they like to do. I think that the sharp edges
helps to convey the seriousness of the artist as well as the type of dress code
which people are expected to wear when they go clubbing as it is important to
look nice to unsure that they can get in. then the slightly curved edges could
then convey the fun and the dancing which people do when they go clubbing. I
think that this could also convey the life at the party and how much more
relaxed people get when once they have finally got into a club and have started
to dance, and they are listening to good music. The same font has been used
throughout I think that this is good as it conveys consistency, throughout the
poster and maintains the dance theme.
There is a good use of graphics on this poster, I think that
they serve a good purpose of attracting people to look at the advert. One of
the main graphics is the woman which is on the front. This is the same woman
which has also been used on the digi-pack. I think that this looks good as this
keeps the graphics looking consistent throughout all of the products. I also
think that this also makes helps to carry a bit of a narrative throughout the
products as well as this woman is on all of them. I think that using the woman
is a good idea as I think that it conforms to the conventions of the dance
genre, thus could attract people to look at the advert. I think that she stands
out well and she looks like she is dancing, she is also wearing clothing which
I think could appeal to a range of different people for example this image of
the woman dancing in minimal clothing could encourage men to look at the poster
as this could be something which could catch their eye, which you then lead
them to look at the poster and maybe want to hear some of the artist music. I
think that it is good as the use of staggering the pictures gives off an appeal
that the woman is dancing. Thus could convey that she is having a good time and
that she couldn’t help but dance this could also help make it stand out more
that this is dance music, this could attract people who like dance music to
want to look at the poster to see if it is something new which is out, thus
could encourage them to look at the poster as well. I think that the use of
making the woman looking like she is dancing helps to convey that she is having
just such a good time and looks like the camera has just caught her mid-way
with what she is doing, just in the middle of her dancing. Thus conveying to
the conventions of the dance genre.
Another graphic
which I think looks good on the front of this advert is the use of the mystery
of sound logo this is placed near the bottom of the advert. I think that is
looks good as it conveys the record label which the artist is part of. This is
good for the record label as this could help to promote them a little bit as it
people see the logo they may want to know who else is on the record label,
which could lead to further promotion for the record labels if the people which
research the label like some of the other artists as well this could encourage
them to start listening to other artists on the same label. I think that this
also looks good as it helps to make the advert look a little bit more
professional. I think that there has been a good use of lights as well, which
are in the background I think that by making the mystery of sound logo purple
that this make it stand out more. As the lights in the background are bold this
makes the logo stand out as well.

Improvements: I
like the use of colour which has been used here I think that it is effective
and conforms to the code and conventions of dance. Therefore I don’t really see
any need to make any changes here. The only thing which I could say to change
for the background could be the size of the spot lights which have been used in
the background, as I think that it could look good to have bigger spot lights
in the background just too maybe fill some more of the black space. I’d
probably only make the purple and the blue spot lights bigger and not the
yellow spot light as that is quite big already. I think that this could look
good as well as conforming to the conventions of dance, thus could appeal to
more people might notice the poster that are into dance.
Another change
which I think could be made is to the font, I wouldn’t change the font to make
but there are a few changes which I think that I would make which I think could
make the poster stand out a little bit more. One of the initial changes which I
think that I would make would be so the text which is used to inform people
about the information about the night. I think that I would change this so that
it looks a little bit different to the font which is used for the name of the
artist. I think that the font could be kept the same but a few changes could be
made to the effects used on the font itself, for example maybe changing the
choice of colours or adding a glow to the outside of the text to make it stand
out a little bit more. The other change which I think could be made to the font
could be to the font which was used for the name of the artist. As I think that
it is important that the name of the artist stands out, and so that when people
see the advert they know straight away what the advert is for and who the
advert is promoting the artist.
Another change
which I think that I could make could be to the woman which is on the front of
the advert. I probably wouldn’t make that many changes to the woman herself.
But I think that I could make the woman a little bit bigger. My reason for this
is to that the woman fills a little bit more of the space which is on the
advert. I think that this could give the look of there being more elements on
the front of the advert and like there is more going on. As if there is large
gaps then this could put people off looking at the advert. I think that there
could also be a little stronger effect made on the woman in the front as well,
so that the effect on the initial image looks a little bit more distorted so
that it is a little hard to see her face giving the allusion that the woman is
moving more.
These are all the changes which I think that I would make to
this advert. I think that overall the advert is really good and definitely
conveys the conventions of the dance genre of music.
I have discussed this advert which one of the members of my
group has designed. I have looked at all of the good aspects of the design looking
at the connotations of some of the asset used could have meant. I think that
this advert does conform to the conventions of the dance music genre, and I think
overall it is very good.
