Analysis of my first advert

 

I will be analyzing the digi-packs which I have produced myself for my artist, I will be discussing what is good about it, where improvements could be made, along with other design aspects of my design. I will also be discussing the changes, which I did make, and what benefits this has on the advert. 

 

How does my advert relate to my chosen genre?

This is the first advert, which I designed, to promote my artist’s new album. I have found that some of the aspects, which I have used, have helped me to relate my album to the dance genre, so that it is obvious when people see it. 

 

    For my choice of color I decided that I needed to make sure that my advert used colors, which would relate to the dance genre. For this reason I thought that it might be a good idea to use more than one color which is bright and vibrate, but also helps to conveys to the house, and dance genre of music. One of the first colors, which I used, was the color black. This is the color which formed the main body for the background of my advert. The reason why I chose to have the color is because, this is a color which is often used a lot in night clubs, as they tend to be dark places therefore I think that this might be a good idea to have this for my background as in a club it is dark this is to create an atmosphere and a mood, for people to have a good time. I wanted to bring that party atmosphere, and that mystery of the unknown which the darkness brings I wanted to created this on my advert as I think that this could then connect with a lot of people which like to listen to the dance and the house genre of music. Thus could then encourage them to want to find out what the advert is about as they could think that this is off interest to them to want to find out what the advert is about as it could be something which interests them. I think that this helps to create the base and a setting for the album, just like the use of the color black would set the scene for a night out in a club.

    I then thought about other colors which I could also use on the front of the advert which could also help me to conform to the dance genre. I had to think of colors which could work well, after much though I decided on some colors navy blue, and red. At first I used the colors on their own, but I found that I wasn’t getting the effect which I wanted from the two colors on their own. That was when I then decided to layer the colors I started with the color red, the reason why I chose to use the color red was because I think that this is a color with many connotations. Some of which being, the most obvious which I think would be that fact that the color red is used a lot in parties, as it is a color which appeals to both men and women, it is a color which is often used in clubs for strobe lights, therefore I think that it is a color which could appeal and conform to the dance genre. Red also connotes, love, lust, run, wildness, and boldness. I therefore that it could be a good idea to use the color red on my advert. I also think that red is such a statement color as well, as it is a color which stands out and one which a lot of people are likely to notice, I also think that this is a color which is often related to love and lust. I think that this is something which often happens at a party, when people feel more confident and let out their wild side. I also think that by me using the color red that it also connotes the people which go clubbing as well, as they can portray to be bold and bright people. I think that the color could also connote the feelings which people could have while they are partying, as they could be getting really hot, which is connoted through the color red.   

    Another color which I used for my advert was navy midnight blue. Again I felt like this is a color which is often used in clubs and therefore thought it could be a good idea to use it on my work. Just like the red, it is common to see blue strobe lights as well going through a club this is also common for the party islands as well to see a lot of blue lighting. Therefore I thought it could be a good idea for me to use the blue and that concept and out my own spin on it. I also thought that just like red this is a color which stands out a lot. I also found that it sat really well with the color red and the two didn’t clash they sat well together. I also think that the color blue also connotes night, and the shade which is chose I found to be very close to the color black. So I thought that this would be good to connote the night and darkness, I have only used a little bit of this color. I have used it on top of the red, to help add to the setting.

    I found that when layering these colors that they all sat together really well. I think that this is shown as on the advert; there is a purple color which has been produced but the layering of the red and the blue. I think that this color is good for capturing the party theme. As the color purple is also one which comes up a lot at parties as it is a bright color which stand outs out. I also think that in the context of which I have used the color that it makes the color stand out more, and helps to bring out all of the emotions which come from going to a party.

    The use of my colors help to tell a story, the black being the background of my work, like the setting of a club, which is also dark, black, and is usually low key lighting. Then the red is in the center, this is where most of the people which go clubbing are. Is like they are the central subject and the main focus of the party it is all about them that is why they are in the middle of the club partying and having a good time, just like the color red is in the middle of the advert, as the color red could be seen as the people. Then the color blue almost connotes the time at which people choose to go out, which is the evening as people go clubbing in the evening, therefore the blue almost connotes the sky outside for the time of which people go clubbing. Therefore I think that all of the main colors which I have use for my background help to conform to the whole club setting for the dance genre.

 

I have chosen to use more than one front on my advert. I decided that I wanted to try and get a really dance related front. I had to decide if I want to have everything with the same front or to have a range of different fronts instead. 

 

I think that another way that my first draft of my poster is the use of the graphic elements which have been used, for example the use of the model on the left hand side of the advert. I think that this is a good way of showing that the poster conforms to the conventions of dance. This is portrayed through the way the woman is posing and the fact that she is a woman. I think that because women are often used a lot when on the front cover of dance related aspects such as digi packs and clubbing posters, that I think that it could then be seen as obvious straight away that this is something in relation to dance. I think that even if people weren’t interested in dance that they would also still know what it is. I also found that on a lot of club advertisements women are often used even if it is just a small figure they are still there on the poster this is to just add a little image to the poster which will clearly state what the poster is about. The type I am thinking of as an example for when people may be sitting in traffic or at the traffic lights and they see the posters on the lamp posts promoting certain DJ’s which will be playing a certain clubs. Then on the advertisement there is usually a picture of a woman on the front of it. For that reason I have decided to use a picture of a woman here just to make that dance genre even clearer and stand out even more. You may also notice the clothing of which she is wearing, here I have tried to capture that whole party clubbing scene which can be had on party islands, where people maybe wouldn’t dress up that much due to the heat out there for would maybe wear minimal clothing instead to still capture that party theme, but also make sure that they don’t get too hot at the same time was well. I have also made sure that the model is not looking at the camera the reason why I have done this is because I think that this helps to capture that party scene again, and makes this image of the woman look like she has just been taken out of a picture of her at a club, as it looks so natural and like the woman is so in her element when posing. Like someone has just captured her dancing mid pose, I think that this is good as it helps to convey the enjoyment of the model, thus conveying the quality of the music and just how good the music on the album may be, and that if people brought the album then they could also enjoy this music as well, and feel the same as the women in the picture showing that she is enjoying herself. I think that this could also help to convey that this album is all about enjoyment, and as there is only one model there I also think that this helps to convey the idea of individuality and how this music can appeal to more than just one set of people. I have made her so that it looks like she is moving. I have done this through the use of the blur which I the dancer has on one side of her body, I have done this to make it look like the woman is dancing, and moving really fast as I think this helps to create that effect that the picture has been taken while the woman is moving, and she has been caught in a natural dance flow, and this is what has been put on the front cover of the poster.

 

I used simple fonts on this advert. The reason for this is because I wanted to make sure that the text was easy to read that that it was clear. Another reason why I used it was because I thought that it could also be easier to read from a distance as well. I found that this could be quite important as posters are usually read from a distance.

    I kept the font the same though the whole of the text, apart from the name of the album, but this was because this was the sticker which was being used everywhere for the name of the album. I tried to get a dance related front, so to so this I used quite a square font which is also quite thin I think that this helps conform to the dance conventions. I found this out from the research, which I had done about dance music, looking at the conventions of the dance genre and what were the stereotypical conventions, I found that this was a conventions of dance font. I think that this could convey seriousness, and the dance genre. I think that this could illustrate the sharpness which people dress like when they go out, and the straight lines I think help to convey the signs for might clubs, this is how I have tired to set out the text so that It looks like a sign for a night club where there could be like a guest performing. That is why I have laid it out like this. I have also used a bevel and emboss effect on the front as well; I done this so that it looks like the font is coming of the page a little bit. I think that this could make it look a little bit heavy; I think that this could then convey that the font is important, and that it has a lot of meaning. I think that the use of the bevel effect helps to make the text stand out a lot more as well. I also think that this could illustrate the importance of the text as well because it is standing out. I think that the use of the centre alignment helps to make the sign looked like it is for a club poster a little bit and I think that this could attract people to want to look at the poster as well

 

This is the initial design, which I came up with for my own digi-pack. I have tired it link it in with the initial design, which I had for the design for the digi-pack as well.   

 

Changes: if I were to make any changes to this digi-pack I would make changes to quite a few things, some of which being; the font as I would make it a little bolder and maybe incorporate another color with this, maybe a blue, or another color which contrasts with the color red, as well as with the color white as well. I think that this is an important change to make as I could make the font conform to the dance convention a little but more I think that this is important, as it is not completely clear that this design of the font is part of the dance genre. But I think that the actual font itself looks like a dance font but I think that I could do more with it to make it look like a dance font. Another change which I think that I could make could be to the alignment to the font as I think that it could more to the left or the right as I think that this could make the text look a little bit like sound waves, I think that this could also help conform to the dance/ house genre of music was well.

    I think that I could also change the size and the positioning on the logo for the name of the album. I think that this could try and create more of a center to the poster, so that it looks like everything is being drawn into the middle of the poster this could convey focus point and that there is so much energy, that people are being drawn into the middle of the poster.

   These are the main changes, which I would make to this dig-pack, to try and make it conform to the dance conventions more.

 

Improvements: I changed some of the design of the digi-pack, I done this after I had got feedback from the other members of my group I changed the design to improve it and make it look better.

    I changed the color of the background, as I wanted to create more of that club theme. This is why I changed the color to black. I also found that this conformed to the conventions of dance a lot more than the color which I had used before. I also think that this then allowed me to use a lot more colors on top of the black background. Another reason why I chose to use the color black is because this is one of the colors which I used for the background of the final digi-pack therefore I thought that it could be a good idea to use this for the color of the poster’s background as this helps to bring together the narrative of the digi-pack and the poster, so that they both relate to each other.

    The next change I made which was also to the background was the line of women which I have at the top of the poster. I wanted to have this as I found that it looked quite eye catching and graphically good. I used quite a metallic effect on this which connotes the jewelry which people wear when they go out for a night out. I think that this could also then connote the swag which people have and the amount of stuff they wear when they go out partying or clubbing to convey how they like to dress up when they go out. I also think that the use of the women which have been stretched out helps to convey the woman moving, really fast. I think that this could show that there is good music on the album, thus conveying that this is for dance music as there is a woman dancing on the front of the album. I also think that the way she is being drawn to one side and all of the repetition of her helps to convey the energy of the album, and in this case the poster, that the woman can’t help dancing into the energy of the album which is drawing her in. I think that this is really graphical and catches the eye of the consumer really well which could thus invite them to look at the poster. I think that there can be another connotation to this as well being that this could convey that the poster is appeal to more than one genre of people to buy the album as there is are tracks on their that could potentially appeal to lots of different people.

    I also made a change to the other woman which is on the front of this poster as well. I moved her slightly more into the middle. The other change which I made was to change the color of the woman as well I changed it so that it’s a little more obvious that the figure is a woman. I think by doing this that this could make it more obvious from a distance what the poster is about, I think that this could then encourage people to want to look at the poster. I also think that by doing this that it helps to capture the look of the woman and the expression which Ion her face, as I think that this could convey that she is lost in the music, and shows that she is partying or dancing. I think that this could thus convey to that woman in the front cover is enjoying the music. I think that this is a good way of conveying to people that this is good music to listen to as well as conveying that it is club music as there is someone dancing on the front of the poster. I think that this then conforms to the conventions of the dance genre of music attracting people to look at the poster. I also think that the use of a woman on the front of the poster could attract people like men to look at the poster as well.

    Another aspect which I changed was the font this was really easy to change as I just used the same font which has been used the same font which I used for the digi-pack as I thought that it would probably be better to match the digi-pack and the poster together as this could help the two to relate together, so that if people see the posters then they could then know what to expect the front cover of the digi-pack to look like. I also think that the front which I have used is good to relate back as like a trade mark for the artist of the album. Through the research which I have done I have found that other artist have done this for example ‘Swedish House Mafia, Drake, and Bruno Mar’. I think that this conveys that this is common in more than one genre of music. That is why I have chosen to keep it the same I also think that this also helps to represent the artist and convey something about the personality of the artist and what they are like, as well as conveying the genre of music my artist conforms to the dance genre of music, but the mix up of fonts also conveys the swag and the style which the artist has himself.

    I kept the place of the information in the same place as well. The reason for this was because I found that the information was easiest to read in this place. I also thought that this text next to the large image of the woman could almost give the illusion that there is not that much text to read because the image of the woman is so big.

     The last aspect which I changed was the positioning of the ‘Save The World’ sticker. This is because I put it in the top left hand corner instead of the middle as this is now where the name of the artist has gone. I think that the sticker works better at the top of the page as I think that it conforms to the conventions of a sticker and the purpose of the sticker for the context which it is in. as the idea is for the sticker to be just stuck anywhere, and to have been placed in a rush so I think that the idea of putting the sticker in the top left hand corner really helps to convey this, I think that is people have seen the music video and then saw this poster that they could kind of understand the reasons why I have decided to place it at the top of the page. So it is on a diagonal to convey that it has not been placed on nicely and that it has been put on in a rush.

 

    These are the main changes which I made to the poster. I made these changes once I had received feedback from the other members of my groups and they told me the changes which they thought I could make to further enhance the aesthetics of the poster and ensure that the eye would be drawn to the poster. I made sure that the visuals were appealing as well as conforming to the conventions of the dance and house genre of music.
